Principals' Message

Dear Lake Anne Families,

As Thanksgiving break approaches, we want to take a moment to reflect on some recent events.

We had our PTA meeting on Wednesday, where the LAES Wellness Team shared additional tools and strategies to further support caregivers in fostering student engagement and well-being. Their insights offered new ways to continue meaningful conversations with students and reinforce their overall wellness and success.

On Thursday, we hosted our Advanced Academics Information Meeting, which provided families with valuable insights into the pathways available to support and challenge our students. Thank you to everyone who attended!

We also participated in the Annual Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on Friday,  a powerful event honoring Ruby’s courage and her contributions to civil rights. Walking in her footsteps reminds us of the importance of inclusion and equity, values we proudly uphold at Lake Anne.

A special THANK YOU to our Safety Patrols and upper-grade students who escorted our younger Dolphins, helping make this event meaningful and ensuring a safe, welcoming environment for all!

FLE Preview Night

Students in grades K-6 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction through their classroom teacher. Students in Kindergarten through grade three receive instruction in an emotional and social health unit.

Students in grades 4-6 receive instruction in a human growth and development unit and an emotional and social health unit. For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please see the detailed grade-level program descriptions (link).

Lake Anne will hold its annual FLE Parent Preview Night on Thursday, November 21 from 6:00 - 6:30 pm. If you would like to learn more about FLE, please join us online in Ms. Porter's virtual office (link).

DUE: Federal Impact Aid Survey Information

Impact Aid forms will go home with your student in their Tuesday Folder on November 19, 2024. Please fill out, sign and date the form before returning it to their classroom teacher or the front office. You can also complete the form through your ParentVue app! It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3! Have your Impact Aid form returned no later than November 26, 2024.

Reminders: Picture Retakes & Thanksgiving Luncheon

PHOTO RETAKES- WEDNESDAY, November 20th!

Photo retakes is scheduled for Wednesday, November 20th.  This day is for new students, absent students, or who did not like their first pictures. 

Any students that are getting their picture retaken, they will need to bring their original pictures in with them and give them to the photographer.

 

THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON- THURSDAY, November 21st!

Thanksgiving Luncheon is back at Lake Anne!  We have missed this wonderful event and are excited to have it back.  Thanksgiving Luncheon will be on Thursday, November 21st. Please consider joining us! 

PTA: Spirit Wear

We have Lake Anne Spirit Wear for Sale (link)! Items include short and long-sleeved t-shirts; hoodies; and flannel PJ pants. Look for our special commemorative t-shirts celebrating 30 years of Spanish Immersion at Lake Anne Elementary. The sale will be open until midnight on 19 November. We plan to deliver items to student classrooms before Winter Break.

PTA: Volunteers Needed for Book Fair

It's Book Fair Time! The Book Fair will return to the LAES Library from December 2-6. We need volunteers to help with set-up, sales, and book pack-up.  Set-up tasks will take place on November 25-26. Sale dates are December 2-6. All volunteers must check in at the school office and obtain a visitor ID sticker prior to reporting to the Library.

PTA: Kid's Night Out

Grown-ups, give the kids a night out with a party at Sterner's Tae Kwon Do Academy! The event is on Saturday, Nov. 23 2024 from 6:00-8:15pm. Cost is $32 per child.  REGISTER HERE.

PTA: Dining 4 Dollars

November's Dining 4 $$$ is on November 22 at Chick Fil A, North Point Village Center (near the Giant). Support our PTA by placing a mobile pickup, dine-in, Drive-thru, or curbside order. When ordering in the store or Drive-thru, let the team member know you are there for the Spirit Event. If you use the app to order, be sure to click Spirit Event when asked and enter the code DOLPHINS (all caps). You get to enjoy a great meal or snack and our PTA will receive a donation of 25% of that day's sales. Since it's all day long, go ahead and eat there for all 3 meals that day (Ha).

 

The PTA would like to thank everyone for supporting ALL of our Dolphins, making a meaningful investment in the future of us all!

Community meetings regarding FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review will take place in each of the division's six regions. You are encouraged to attend the meeting in our region, which will take place on Wednesday, December 18, 6:30-8 p.m., at Madison High School Cafeteria.

Principals' Message

Hello Dolphin Families,

We hope you all are having a fantastic November! Here at Lake Anne Elementary School we definitely are!

Our 4th grade Dolphins made waves at the Kennedy Center, experiencing the magic of "Let's Build an Orchestra."

A big fin-tastic thank you to our PTA and all the Dolphin Pod Squads who joined us for our monthly Walk & Roll. Your support continues to make our school community stronger.

We also want to express our gratitude to everyone who participated in our Veterans Day observance. It was a heartwarming event that honored our heroes. The musical selections from our Band and Chorus students brought the ceremony to life, filling the room with beautiful melodies and patriotic spirit.

Looking Ahead:

On November 14th at 9:30, we will be celebrating Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. We would love for our Lake Anne Families to join us for the unity walk. Let's come together as a community to celebrate diversity and kindness!

As we dive into the winter months, please remember to stay warm and safe. We look forward to many more exciting adventures together.

Parent Parent Project Workshops for the South Lakes High School Pyramid in January of 2025

The FCPS Office of Family and School Partnerships are offering a 10-week course designed to empower families and transform teens. In taking this course, participants will walk away with tools to learn (1) how to build a positive relationship with their child, (2) ways to prevent or intervene in alcohol and drug use, disruptive behavior at home and gang affiliation, and (3) ways to explore concrete solutions for active supervision. Classes are free, once a week and 2 hours each class. Use the link above to register. 

Langston Hughes Theater Expo 2024

Rising 6th Graders are invited to attend the LHMS Theater Expo on November 21st from 6-8pm. Join Ms. Dewenter and her Advanced Theater Students to see what Theater is all about in Middle School! There will also be LHMS teachers and parent volunteers there. You can anticipate enjoying:

📍 Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair

Parents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School. 

The event is sponsored by Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Activities include simulated IEP meetings, break-out sessions on the various parts of an IEP, and a resource fair to learn more about community supports. Register in advance. 

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

Medicaid and Medicare Changes

Starting December 18, 2024, the State of Virginia is changing how Medicaid and Medicare work together for some  Anthem members. This change will affect members who have both Medicaid and Medicare. The State of Virginia is finalizing the review of remaining Medicaid members for eligibility. Thousands of individuals may lose their benefits in the coming months due to incorrect addresses or other reasons. Please be aware that these changes may impact your access to healthcare services. It's crucial to stay informed and take necessary actions to maintain continuous coverage.

What's Changing?

• One Health Plan: Starting January 1, 2025, one health plan will manage both your Medicaid and Medicare benefits.
• Potential Disruptions: This change may disrupt your current health services, especially if you receive home health care.

What Can You Do?

If you have Anthem Medicaid and your Medicare is with another company, you can take action now to avoid disruptions:

1. Change Your Medicare Plan: By changing your Medicare plan, you can keep your Anthem HealthKeepers Plus Medicaid on January 1 and beyond.
2. Update Your Address and Verify Your Eligibility
   • Contact your local social services agency or call Cover VA at 833-522-5582 to report any changes to your mailing address
   • If you have lost your Medicaid coverage and believe you are still eligible, contact Cover VA at 833-522-5582 to inquire about reinstatement.

Principals' Message

Hello Dolphin Families,

We wish a fun Diwali to all celebrating! Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs & some Buddhists. The festival represents the symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. 

This week we recognize those in our community observing All Saints Day and Día de los Muertos. For Catholics, All Saints Day (November 1) celebrates all those who are with God in Heaven, known and unknown. All Souls Day (November 2), known in Mexico and Latin America as Día de los Muertos, is a day of remembrance and prayer for all those who have died, especially for the souls who may be in purgatory. These special days are celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, and some Protestants throughout the world.

We hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend!

Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. 

National Family Engagement Month

This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success. 

FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.

Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.

If you have questions or would like more information, ask your school office to connect you with your family liaison or visit FCPS’ website for a list of region representatives. 

Honoring Our Veterans

Veterans Day is Monday, November 11, 2024 and since there is no school on this day we will be observing Veterans Day on Friday, November 8, 2024. At our school, we are committed to honoring our veterans and their important contributions to our community and nation. We have planned a special day to show our appreciation.

We warmly invite our community veterans to join us on this day. You'll have the opportunity to participate in various activities and events at our school, such as a performance by our Lake Anne Chorus and the chance to meet and engage with our students. You can also share your valuable insights and experiences from your time in the armed forces.

The day will kick off with a chorus performance at 9:30 AM, and we'd be delighted to have you with us. To help us prepare for your visit, please take a moment to fill out this Google Form if you're interested in joining us. Your presence and wisdom will play an essential role in educating our students about the diverse roles veterans have played in our community and nation.

We sincerely thank you for your service and look forward to celebrating this important day together.

Principals' Message

Dear Dolphin Families,

What a fantastic time to be a Dolphin! This week was National Bus Safety Week, during which our student news anchors made daily announcements highlighting crucial safety tips. Students who ride the bus took part in a bus evacuation drill, which is essential for ensuring they know how to respond in an emergency. It was great to see everyone taking this important lesson seriously, reinforcing our commitment to safety on and off the bus.

We continue our dedication to supporting learning and engagement through encouraging full-day attendance. Research shows that students who attend school consistently are more likely to achieve higher academic success and develop better social skills. As of Thursday, our attendance rate was around 11%. That’s something to celebrate after hitting a high earlier in the week of 17%. Thank you for helping us show our Dolphins that every day counts!

As a reminder, Book Character Day is coming up on Thursday, October 31st. To celebrate our love for reading, Lake Anne Dolphins and staff have the opportunity to come dressed up as their favorite book character and if they have the book, they are able to bring it along. We can’t wait!

IMPORTANT: Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will provide paper forms in November. Please be sure to return them by Friday, November 17. 

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Learn how to activate your SIS ParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey.

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reports and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon, and I’m excited to share them with you!

Dear Lake Anne Families,

We had a fantastic time at the Hispanic Heritage Parade this past Tuesday! Thank you to our dedicated teachers, enthusiastic students, and all the families who joined us in celebrating our vibrant community.

The Dolphin Dash was a great success as well, with students enjoying fun in the sun in their spirit wear. A heartfelt thank you to the PTA for organizing the event and to all who attended and donated—your support is an investment in our students’ futures.

Next week is National Bus Safety Week. National School Bus Safety Week is an active and evolving public education program and an excellent way for parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus operators, school administrators, and other interested parties - to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety. You can find more resources for parents on their program's website. Please take a moment to talk with your child about bus safety; together, we can keep our community safe.

As we continue our efforts to keep families informed, we wanted to share that Lake Anne Elementary's chronic absenteeism rate is currently 15.4%. Regular attendance is crucial for your child's success and our community's wellbeing. We appreciate your continued support in helping us help your child reach their greatest potential.

Starting next week, we will send "attendance report cards" to families of students who have missed five or more days of school this year. That is 15.4% of our student population. FCPS and the Virginia Department of Education may require attendance plans or conferences for these students as another way for us to partner with families to problem-solve barriers to their child's learning.

Look for November events celebrating students who improve or maintain their success. At Lake Anne, we believe every child and every day matters!

Focus Group to Reflect and Gather Insights on Fairfax County's Fairfax County’s Department of Neighborhood and Community Services’ Early Childhood Programs and Services

School Readiness Consulting is partnering with Fairfax County’s Department of Neighborhood and Community Services’ Early Childhood Programs and Services division to reflect on the county’s current landscape, strategies, and goals for serving young children and their families. As part of this process, they are hosting focus groups from October 21 - November 1 to gather valuable insights on the early childhood system from family members.

Join them for a focus group to share your perspective. To compensate you for taking time to share your experience, they will be providing a digital $40 gift card following the focus group.

“SUGAR SKULL! A Día de Muertos Musical Adventure”, An Alden Theatre Production, October 30th at 7 pm

"SUGAR SKULL! A Día de Muertos Musical Adventure” is a bilingual/bicultural musical that uses traditional music and dance from Mexico to tell the story of 12-year-old Vita Flores, who thinks her family has gone loco planning a celebration for deceased loved ones. But when a spirited candy skeleton suddenly springs to life, Vita finds herself on a magical, musical journey that unravels the true meaning of Día de Muertos. Safeway Immunization Clinics for All FCPS Students 

Safeway Pharmacy will host immunization clinics for any FCPS student age 18 or younger at Frost Middle School on Monday, October 28, and Tuesday, October 29, from 3 to 7 p.m.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students age 18 or younger to provide consent. Learn more about immunization resources and registering in other languages for the Safeway clinic. 

Students age 19 and older may access free immunizations at their middle/high school immunization clinic, the Fairfax County Health Department or through other community resources.

Elementary School Clinics

The Fairfax County Health Department will provide immunizations for FCPS elementary students on limited early release Mondays at their district offices. All school-required immunizations will be offered at no cost. Call 703-246-7100 to make your appointment.

Middle and High School Clinics

FCPS is partnering with the health department to host immunization clinics at middle and high schools. Clinics will take place during the school day. Students may only participate in the clinic at the school where they are enrolled. Parental/caregiver consent is required for students to receive immunizations.

Happy Friday, Lake Anne Family!

Although temperatures are starting to cool, we hope all of our Pod Squads (families) have an opportunity to unplug, get some fresh air, and enjoy the long weekend. Remember, there is no school for students on Monday!

A big thank you to all who joined us for Walk and Roll on Wednesday; your enthusiasm helped to start the day with joy and laughter!

As we continue to cultivate a welcoming and inclusive environment of resilient learners, we've noticed an increase in student absences and late arrivals to school. We want to provide a friendly reminder that instruction begins at 8:50 am. When a student arrives late their attendance is marked as tardy and they not only miss out on important learning opportunities, but also impact others when entering the room after instruction has already begun. While we know and understand that there will be times when a student must be absent, regular attendance is essential for ALL our students to learn, grow, and thrive together! Currently, our absenteeism rate is at 13% a great drop of 4% from this time last year, and our goal continues to be reaching and maintaining 10% or below. Together, we can achieve this!

Hispanic Heritage Month Parade

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close we still have one more celebratory event left. All Lake Anne Elementary students of Hispanic Heritage and/or within the Spanish Immersion program are invited to participate in the parade. All those participating that are not in the Immersion program will notify their Homeroom teacher if they wish to participate in the parade and will be assigned to a teacher from the Immersion program for the parade.

Parents are welcome to attend the parade.

Community Resource Spotlight: Food Pantry

We are thrilled to highlight one of our wonderful community partners, St. Anne's Episcopal Church, who generously provides nutritious food to our families and community members the third Thursday of the month. We appreciate being a part of a community where support and kindness flourish. For this month, the pantry will be open on September 19th from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm.

Celebrating the Power of School Lunches

Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers. 

This School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. Also, new menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback. 

Want to know what’s for breakfast or lunch? Nutrition Services now has printable menus. 

Volunteers Needed: Beautification and Restoration of the Courtyard and Edible Garden

We are excited to invite you to a special gardening event dedicated to
restoring our beloved learning spaces. This community-driven effort will help
rejuvenate our courtyard and garden spaces, making them more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Please confirm your attendance to Sra.

• Place and pin weed barrier cloth
• Spread mulch on new pathways
• Place garden stepping stones
• Place cardboard on any remaining pathways

For our Edible Garden, we will:

• Place cardboard on any remaining pathways & beds
• Pull weeds from the soil pile and spread soil over the garden perimeter
  grass (we will not use this soil pile in the garden beds

We welcome all volunteers, regardless of their gardening experience. It’s a
wonderful opportunity to meet your neighbors, enjoy the outdoors, and
contribute to the beautification of our school.

Dear Dolphin Family,

This week, we had the delightful opportunity to celebrate our wonderful custodians with a vibrant parade! Our students and staff expressed their gratitude by creating colorful signs, writing personalized cards, and cheerfully shaking pom-poms while singing along to "Celebrate Good Times" by Kool & The Gang. We are incredibly thankful for all that our custodians do to ensure our school is a safe, clean, and welcoming place for everyone.

We also want to remind our Dolphin pods about the importance of daily attendance. We know that even excused absences can create ripples in a child’s learning journey. Your partnership is vital in helping us support your child's academic success and social-emotional development. We understand that some absences are unavoidable and  appreciate your collaboration in minimizing their impact. When a student misses 5 or more days of school (for any reason), we are required by the State of Virginia to follow up, document, and create support plans for the student and family. Thank you for your commitment to ensuring that “Every School Day Matters and Every Child Matters!”

As we dive into this new season at Lake Anne, we’d like to extend warm wishes for Shanah Tovah to our Jewish students and families. May this new year bring you joy, health, and prosperity.

📚 Social Studies Basal Resources Review

FCPS is adopting Social Studies Basal Resources for the 2025-26 school year. Basal resources are the primary resources used to support instruction in a given subject. Public review of the instructional materials under consideration — which is part of the process for selecting new resources — is underway. Visit the Community Review webpage for more information on how to view the materials online or in person. 

All community feedback will be shared with School Board members before they vote to select materials in spring 2025. FCPS adopts basal resources by the process outlined in Regulation 3004.

Principals' Message

Dear Dolphin Family,

We recently hosted our first in-person Lake Anne Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meeting since the reopening of school due to the COVID pandemic, and it was a huge success! We had a fantastic turnout, with families coming together to connect and support our school community. The evening started with pizza and snacks for families to enjoy. Then, we discussed our core beliefs, goals for the year, what it means to be a Title I school, and what's going on "At the Lake". While the adults met, former Dolphins helped the children engage in creative play, providing an atmosphere of joy and teamwork that truly embodies our Dolphin sprit!

As we ride the waves of this school year, we encourage everyone to stay engaged in our events and initiatives. We look forward to seeing you at the Dolphin Dash on October 18th. Your support and participation helps make a big splash in enriching our children's educational experience. 🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations for all FCPS students at no cost!

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations for all FCPS students at no cost! Parents or guardians may schedule an appointment and provide consent for their student(s). The immunization clinics are being held at Frost Middle School, 4101 Pickett Rd. Fairfax, VA 22032, on: 

• Tuesday, October 8, 3 to 7 p.m.
• Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Students under the age of 19, with a scheduled appointment and parental consent, must be accompanied by their parent, guardian, or another adult over the age of 19. 

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 in order to provide consent.

DUE MONDAY- Student Rights and Responsibilities Form

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R. 

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R by Monday, September 30. If needed, you can also sign and return the signature sheet to Lake Anne.

Providing students and staff with a safe educational environment remains our priority. Sadly, gun violence continues to impact schools and communities across our nation.

In FCPS, lessons on gun safety are built into our curriculum. It is critical that parents and guardians talk to their children about the importance of gun safety and safe gun storage in their homes, and in any home they may visit.

Principals' Message

Hello, Dolphin Families

We've had a wonderful week here at Lake Anne. Students have been enjoying the National Hispanic Heritage month decorations throughout the front lobby and in the hallways. This is such a wonderful time of year to learn and celebrate the rich cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities.

Tonight, families and community members have come together to enjoy the 4th Annual PTA Movie Night with Inside Out 2. We truly appreciate the PTA and the Reston Association for all they do to connect our families and community members together. Please join the PTA, Jill, and Melanie next week for pizza and don't forget to stay for the meeting as we continue to partner together for all of our children here at Lake Anne Elementary.

Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students. 

After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office. 

Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

• Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
• Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
• Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
• Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
• A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
• Alcohol or drug use.
• Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family. 
• Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact [name], our [school psychologist, school counselor, or school social worker] at [phone/email], to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness. 

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

Hello, Dolphin Families

As we wrap up the first twenty days of school, we want to take a moment and reflect on the importance of this period of time. These first weeks are crucial for establishing routines, building relationships, and setting the tone for the rest of the year. We've seen great progress and enthusiasm from our Dolphins and appreciate your support in making this a successful start. 

We are so excited for this weekend's festivities and hope you will join us for the South Lakes High School Homecoming parade and football game. It's a wonderful opportunity for us to come together for our community and support the Seahawks! We look forward to seeing you there in your Dolphin gear!

🤒 When Should Your Dolphin Stay Home From School?

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

SLHA PTSA Food Pantry FUNdraiser

Please join the South Lakes High School PTSA on September 29 from 2:00-4:00 pm for their 7th Annual food pantry FUNdraiser. It is the ONLY one they will do this school year! Your Way 0.5k! 

The SLHS PTSA Food Pantry started in April of 2017 to address food insecurity in the SLHS Pyramid. In our pyramid 2,949 students, or almost 38%, qualify for free and reduced lunch. The SLHS PTSA Food Pantry has been able to provide programs for student shopping, curbside pick-up, and Bags for Langston Hughes. The latter is a beloved program where students in the Work, Awareness, and Transition (WAT) program at SLHA pack up 35-50 bags of food and bring them to Langston Hughes Middle School for students identified by the Langston MS team. The WAT students love doing this because they get to go back to the middle school and say hel thelo to their former teachers along the way

We hope to see you out on the plaza, September 29th, for 650-step FUNdraiser! Don't forget to start training!

🍽️Fueling Student Success: New Food Options Cooked up at FCPS

Students will have more than a dozen new options for lunch and breakfast in school cafeterias starting this week. New menu items were either favorites at last year’s food show — including Korean BBQ wings, sweet Thai chili wings, chicken tikka masala, and barbacoa street tacos — or were tested with student focus groups and tastings.

We understand that the multiple school forms caregivers receive during the first weeks of school can feel overwhelming, but each one helps set your child up for a successful school year! If you do not have a SIS ParentVUE account, please contact the front office for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account webpage. 

🩹 Immunization Requirements 

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. 

You may check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to [SCHOOL NAME] front office. 

Alternative immunization documents (below) may also be provided, but they may not be uploaded in ParentVUE:  

• A healthcare provider’s written statement specifying all administered immunizations.
• A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
• A notarized Religious Exemption form objecting to the administration of immunizations due to conflicts with religious tenets or practices.

Families can easily grant permission for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. Parents can opt their child in or out of resources including online educational tools, school counseling services, and tutoring services. The SR&R document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when logging in to that platform. Dear Dolphin Families,

Welcome to another exciting month at Lake Anne! On Thursday, we had a splash-tastic Back to School Night, where our Dolphin parents had the chance to meet their child’s teacher(s) making staff even more excited to dive into this school year's learning adventures!

Friday marked our first “Walk & Roll” event of the school year. We were so thrilled to see the many students, families, and staff gathering together as we walked or "rolled" to and from school. Not only does "Walk & Roll" promote healthy habits, but further builds and helps to maintain a sense of community here at Lake Anne. Please join us the first Friday of every month so that we can “Walk & Roll” together!

As we continue recognizing Attendance Awareness Month, we wanted to share our current chronic absenteeism rate. We are swimming along at 12%, and our school goal is to maintain this high standard. Each day we partner together to keep chronic absenteeism down, we provide all Dolphins' the environment to leap into excellence!

Safety Alert- Visitors (Parents, unenrolled children, etc.)

All visitors must report to the office immediately upon entering the building and show ID.  Younger children, friends of students, and students from other schools will not be allowed to spend the day or part of it in a classroom.  Animals are not permitted on school grounds or in classrooms. There is an exception for service dogs.

Visitors must wear visitor badges (provided in the office) and it must be visible at all times while in the building. The safety of our children is of prime importance to us. Visitors are only permitted in the classroom during instructional time if they are volunteering, have been invited by the classroom teacher, or are accompanied by an administrator.  Classroom observations by parents or outside professionals must be arranged in advance with the principal and are limited to 30 minutes.

ACTION ITEM: Limited Early Release Mondays for Elementary Schools

Thank you to everyone who has been able to let us know their childcare needs for the upcoming Early Release Mondays. Currently, we have 230 responses for 600 students. Please complete the form linked below. 

To ensure an excellent education and address individual student needs, teachers require dedicated planning time. This includes time for lesson preparation, professional development, and collaboration with colleagues.

In response, FCPS has scheduled seven three-hour early release days (Mondays) for elementary students during the 2024-25 school year. 

Early release Mondays are planned for elementary schools in the following pyramids: Herndon, Langley, Madison, Marshall, McLean, South Lakes, Centreville, Chantilly, Fairfax, Oakton, Robinson, and Westfield.

Lake Anne will release at 1:05 PM on these dates:

- September 23

- October 28

- November 25

- February 24

- March 17

- April 28

- May 19

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/etH4ibY91YfHRWtd7 for each of your children who are enrolled at Lake Anne Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.

Attendance Matters: Every Student Every Day

Take a look at the FCPS Calendar:  

• Ensure that any trips that you have planned for the school year are on weekends and school holidays.  Every day of learning is a day toward success.
• If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to the school.  You may submit information via [email protected] or 703-326-3535 (24/7).  We appreciate your collaboration in scheduling appointments outside of school hours, when possible.
• If you know in advance that your child will miss school, please complete and submit the Prearranged Absence Form. Forms must be submitted in advance to allow adequate time for administrative review.  When planning trips, please keep in mind that absences add up quickly, and students who are absent 10 percent of the school year, or just two days per month, are considered “chronically absent.”Do

DID YOU KNOW?

• Students should miss no more than nine days of school each year to stay engaged, successful, and on track to graduation.
• Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with a bully, or facing some other potentially serious difficulty.
• By 6th grade, absenteeism (defined as missing 18 days per school year) is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
• By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
• Missing 10 percent, or about 18 days, of the school year can drastically affect a student’s academic success.
• Students can be chronically absent even if they only miss a day or two every few weeks.
• Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child graduate from college and keep a job!

We are SO excited to invite all our Dolphins and their "pod squad" (family) to the South Lakes Homecoming Parade! We would love for you to join us in the parade so that all of Lake  Anne can make a SPLASH together and remain the South Lakes Pyramid Spirit Stick champion!

Parade participants will meet at Lake Anne ES on September 12 @ 4:00 pm. Please be sure to show your Dolphin pride by wearing spirit wear. This is anything with the Lake Anne logo and/or Lake Anne Blue (or shades of blue).

We can’t wait to celebrate with you! Leading up to Homecoming, our Dolphins are encouraged to participate in Spirit Week. As an EcoSchool, we encourage everyone to first use what they already have and supplement, as needed. Join us in cheering on the South Lakes Seahawks to VICTORY!

We are thrilled to celebrate the Lake Anne Elementary’s Spanish Immersion Program turning 30 this year! Family Life Education (FLE) Instructional Program Information

The message below is from Instructional Services. Any FLE Program questions may be addressed by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by email to [email protected].

 

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available in Parent Digital Consent.  Paper opt-out forms are available from your child’s school.  Students receiving special education services and accessing modified curriculum will receive a printed opt-out form for modified FLE lessons.  

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Note: Hard copies of the FLE Opt-out form (English)will go home in your child's Tuesday folder. The Translated copies are available on the FCPS Website. Information about the FLE preview night will be sent out soon.

Principals' Message

Dear Dolphin Family,

We have successfully completed our second week and have seen friendships blossom as students learn and grow together in new classroom environments.

As we continue to navigate the school year, we want to emphasize the importance of consistent attendance. September is Attendance Awareness Month. Your dolphins are such an integral part of what makes us such a strong community so when one part is missing, we feel incomplete. It is so important for all our Dolphins to attend school regularly and arrive on time each day by 8:50 a.m.  Every day a student is absent is a lost opportunity for learning.  Join us in celebrating every child, every day by ensuring on-time and full day attendance.

Kiss and Ride- Safety Alert!

To ensure that all Dolphins get home safely and there be a smooth drop-off and pick-up, we want to provide a gentle reminder regarding Kiss and Ride procedures. The procedures below are things we want to emphasize entering into our third week of school:

• Pull forward as far as possible into the designated Kiss and Ride lane before loading or unloading.
• Refrain from:
  • Parking in the Kiss and Ride lane,
  • Leaving car unattended, and
  • Cell phone use so that you can greet your child and ask about their day. This also ensures awareness of your surroundings, smooth traffic flow, and reduces safety issues caused by distracted driving.
• Exit Kiss & Ride promptly after loading or unloading children.

NOTE: We also ask that whoever is picking up your child refrain from walking through the bus loop to pick up students. 

Thank you for continuing to partner with us so that all of our Dolphins are safe and secure.

South Lakes Homecoming Events

We can't wait to see our Dolphins and their "pod" (family) at the 2024 South Lake Homecoming events. This year's theme is "A Night in New Orleans". The annual homecoming parade will be Friday, September 13th from 5:00-6:00. It will begin at Hunters Woods Plaza (2304 Hunters Woods Plaza, Reston, VA, 20191) and end at South Lakes High School, followed by the Homecoming football game at 7:00 pm. 

Any additional information will be provided leading up to the parade.

2024 Student Rights and Responsibilities Form DUE by September 30th

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R. 

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R by Monday, September 30. If needed, you can also sign and return the signature sheet to Lake Anne. 

You can submit questions online regarding the SR&R.

Update Your Child’s Immunizations and Records by September 30th

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. 

You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to a school’s front office. 

If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. If needed, families may also provide other immunization documentation including a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.

Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance. 

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill. 

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

⚠️ Know Our Security Terms

FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned. 

If students, staff, or community members have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.  

Family Life Education (FLE) Instructional Program Information

The message below is from Instructional Services. Any FLE Program questions may be addressed by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by email to [email protected].

 

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available in Parent Digital Consent.  Paper opt-out forms are available from your child’s school.  Students receiving special education services and accessing modified curriculum will receive a printed opt-out form for modified FLE lessons.  

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Principal's Message

Hello Lake Anne Family,

We've had a wonderful first week of school!  Our teachers are starting the year off strong with setting expectations and ensuring that all classes embody our Lake Anne Core Beliefs of Rigor, Relationships, and Respect.  We have visited many classrooms this week to discuss our Student Rights & Responsibilities to ensure that we create a positive learning environment that allows all of our dolphins to grow and achieve.  We look forward to visiting more classrooms next week to continue these discussions.

It is important that every family digitally sign the Student Rights and Responsibilities acknowledgement via ParentVue.  Once you log into your ParentVue account, you will be able to sign many important forms.  For guidance on accessing your ParentVue account, watch this video.

Thank you for all of your cooperation and consideration throughout the week.  We are looking forward to a positively impactful year for the Lake Anne community!

South Lakes Block Party, Today!

Good times at our pyramid high school, on Friday August 23rd from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

This is a student led event where clubs, organizations, and sports teams set up tables with information about their group. Many of them often have games. There will also be a Kona Ice Truck at the South Lakes Block Party.

There is no admission fee; there are costs associated with spirit wear for sale, food trucks, and some group fundraisers.

Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions! Free and Reduced-Priced Meal Applications

As of October 31, 2022 approximately 34 percent of students in FCPS qualify for free and reduced-price meals. The prices for paid breakfast and lunch are determined by the School Board and the price of reduced-price meals are established by the federal government. 

For more information about Free and Reduced-Priced Meal applications, please click the following link.  Interested families are encouraged to submit the Free and Reduced-Priced Meal application before the first day of the 2024-2025 school year.  The free and reduced-price meals application includes an online option for parents to submit the information electronically for faster processing.

If you have children eligible for the federal Free and Reduced-Price Meals program, they may also be eligible to participate in other Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) fee-based programs without paying a fee or by paying a reduced fee. You are also eligible to receive information about scholarships, classes, and services that are provided by agencies and organizations other than FCPS.

Dear Lake Anne Families,

As we prepare for the first day of school on Monday, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our Open House and Water and Warmth mural ribbon cutting ceremony. Your presence and support made the event truly special and set a positive tone for the year ahead. 

Lake Anne teachers and staff are excited to welcome our Dolphins back and to embark on a fantastic school year together. We are committed to providing a nurturing and dynamic learning environment where each student can thrive.

How Does Your Child Get Home?

We want to make sure that your child gets home safely and in a timely manner. If you haven't let their teacher know if they are a walker, car rider, or bus rider, please notify the main office no later than 10:30 on Monday, August 19, 2024.

Lake Anne First Day Folders

On Monday, your child will come home with a blue and white folder. Please review the information in the folder and return the appropriate forms to your child's teacher no later than Friday, August 23rd.

The folder is for you to keep at home and includes information regarding arrival and dismissal times, policy information and Lake Anne's phone numbers.

Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents and caregivers to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available: a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents/caregivers with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Principal's Message

Dear Lake Anne Family,

It seems that the Weekly Wave that was sent yesterday was extremely delayed and had information from the last school year. We apologize for the late delivery and the incorrect information. Please see the updated Weekly Wave message below. Additional information has also been added. 

 

We look forward to seeing you at our Open House on Thursday, August 15, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM and Mural Ribbon Cutting Ceremony from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Our final Beach Book-In will also take place during this time. While you are there, be sure to enjoy Popsicles on the Playground with our amazing Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

You will receive your child’s teacher name and classroom information on Wednesday, August 14th via an eNotify email message.

We’d like to publicly thank our incredible custodial team for their tireless efforts to ensure our building is ready to welcome back our dolphins, staff, and families. Their dedication and hard work do not go unnoticed. We are grateful for their dedication and commitment to making Lake Anne a great place to learn and work.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our Dolphin Family.  Together, we will make this school year the best one yet!

Limited Early Release Mondays for Elementary Schools

To ensure an excellent education and address individual student needs, teachers require dedicated planning time. This includes time for lesson preparation, professional development, and collaboration with colleagues.

In response, FCPS has scheduled seven three-hour early release days (Mondays) for elementary students during the 2024-25 school year. 

Early release Mondays are planned for elementary schools in the following pyramids: Herndon, Langley, Madison, Marshall, McLean, South Lakes, Centreville, Chantilly, Fairfax, Oakton, Robinson, and Westfield.

Lake Anne will release at 1:05 PM on these dates:

- September 23

- October 28

- November 25

- February 24

- March 17

- April 28

- May 19

Online Verification Update Packet

The Online Verification Update (OVU) packet allows parents to review and update phone numbers, emergency contacts, and health information (such as health conditions and immunizations) for students in grades PS/HS and kindergarten through 12th grade. The enrolling parent will be able to access OVU through their SIS ParentVUE account. 

*The enrolling parent is the natural or adoptive parent or legal guardian with whom the student lives the preponderance of the school week and who enrolled the student in school. (See Regulation 2240) Forms can be located in the Back to School packets and on the General Registration Forms page.

The Online Verification/Update packet has been developed as an optional tool, specifically available to our zoned schools and Thomas Jefferson High School. Parents/Guardians can continue to use traditional paper forms to submit changes to the schools.

The enrolling parent must have an active SIS ParentVUE Account to access and complete the OVU packet.

Parents can obtain an activation key letter to activate their SIS ParentVUE account by contacting their child’s school or by submitting a Parent Support Request form (select “SIS Parent” in the Application dropdown and “Account Activation” from the Inquiry dropdown) for assistance with this process.

Important:  Do not use the OVU packet if your address has changed or if you moved to another FCPS school.  Contact the current school directly to complete address updates or to withdraw and transfer your student to the new school.
